There are times when someone requests one-off access to your Mac, say, to check their email or to look up something on the web. The scenario I'm trying to prevent (I'm not sure if this would technically be considered a "security vulnerability" but it's important to my business) is users installing software that allows them to capture streaming media. I have streaming media that can only be viewed on these machines, and if someone can install a program that allows them to capture it and take it with them, it defeats so many of our other security measures.
Now, for any file (or folder) in Finder, you can assign read-write permissions group wise from the file’s inspector dialog (File > Get Info).
This depends. First, know that all Macs must have an admin account to be able to administer updates, install and uninstall apps, encrypt drives, and much more, but this does not mean you have to actively use an Admin account, and many Mac users rely on a “Standard” account for day-to-day activities on their computer. If you are an advanced user who is comfortable with administrator level access and what it offers, then sure you can use an Admin account. With that said, many security professionals recommend using a “Standard” account and only escalating to Admin level privileges when they are required to install an app or software update. There is no right or wrong answer here, it just depends on your comfort level, security habits, the Mac usage environment itself, and your particular computer use case.
To create accounts on your Mac, launch System Preferences. If you’re running Lion, select the Users & Groups preference. On a Snow Leopard-or-earlier Mac, choose the Accounts preference. Click the lock icon at the bottom of the window and, when prompted, enter your administrator’s password and click the Unlock button. You’re now ready to add a new account.
